The calculation of the NEET score involves simple mathematics. The NTA calculates the score of candidates by adopting the formula given below. Even the students can calculate their NEET score with the help of their answer key using the formula mentioned.

The pattern of marking adopted by NTA includes -

· A reward of 4 marks for each correct answer.

· Deduction of 1 mark for each incorrect answer.

· The questions that students do not attempt or mark more than one answer are not considered in the marking.

The formula for calculating NEET score -

Total Score = (Number of correct answers X 4) — (Number of incorrect answer X 1)

The NTA also announces the percentile rank of the students in the NEET result. It is defined as the score percentage that comes under a specified score within a group. How is the percentile score for each student calculated? How is it important in NEET result? The formula to calculate the percentile score of each candidate is -

100 X No. of students obtaining marks equal to/less than the candidate’s marks Total number of students who have appeared for the exam.

The NTA has set a minimum percentile requirement for the students appearing for the exam in order to be eligible for admission to an MBBS or BDS course. The students who fail to fulfill the minimum percentile requirement do not qualify for admissions at colleges listed under NEET. The table below highlights the minimum percentile requirement for students.

NEET Result — Merit List

Besides declaring the NEET result for students individually, the NTA also releases a cumulative merit list based on the scores obtained by them. The merit list contains the ‘All India Rank’ of the students who have appeared for the examination. It enlists the name of the all the successful candidates who have been shortlisted for seats reserved under All India Quota (15%). Furthermore, each state also releases its state-level merit list based on students’ All India Rank and their respective category. A student is invited for NEET 2021 counselling based on his/her rank in the merit list.

What would happen if two or more students obtain the same marks?

Under this situation, the NTA determines an inter-se-merit after considering the following conditions. It acts as a tie-breaker in identifying the most eligible candidate.

· Initially, the first preference is given to students who have obtained higher marks in Biology (Zoology and Botany).

· The second preference is given to students who have obtained higher marks in Chemistry.

· The third preference is given to students who have attempted the least number of incorrect answers in all the subjects.

· Lastly, the candidates with older age get preference.
